BRAZIL RECOGNIZES HIP-HOP CULTURE IN PRESIDENTIAL DECREE

On November 20, 2023, Brazil will become the first country in the world to officially recognize Hip-Hop Culture as an appreciation and promotion of Hip-Hop culture. The decree will be signed by the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, at Palácio do Planalto, in Brasília.

Celebrating 50 years of existence, the Hip-Hop movement is about to reach another historic milestone in its trajectory. The appreciation and promotion of Hip-Hop culture as an artistic expression is a significant step towards preserving and valuing this manifestation that has influenced generations of Brazilians.

Hip-Hop encompasses different elements, such as music, dance, graffiti and the characteristic lifestyle. Originating in the United States, the movement gained prominence in Brazil in the 1980s, mainly on the outskirts of large cities. Since then, it has become a powerful form of expression, addressing social, racial and political issues.

The appreciation and promotion of Hip-Hop culture brings with it the responsibility of preserving and promoting the cultural diversity present in this movement. Furthermore, it strengthens the identity and pride of the communities that identify with this artistic manifestation.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, known as Lula, was chosen to sign the decree due to his history of supporting and valuing popular cultural manifestations. His presence at the signing of the decree reinforces the Brazilian government's commitment to recognizing and valuing the country's cultural diversity.
